We finally shared our sixth studio album ‘This Is What A Winner Looks Like’ with the world after working on it for such a long time, and it was amazing to see what a great response it got. It really was a pleasure to put this album together, and record live drums at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, so naturally we are immensely proud of the finished product. We’re so glad you like it too.

(Very special thanks go out to everyone who voted for the album in TIWN Media’s ‘Top 10’ competition for Welsh bands and artists – we finished in 2nd place which is a great honour for us)

Once the album was released, we also got ourselves back out on the road to play live which we absolutely love to do. The Godsticks band van rolled into Cardiff, London, Newcastle and Edinburgh for 4 excellent shows in June, and then of course in November we hit the HRH Prog Festival in Great Yarmouth where we headlined the second stage on the Saturday night. Now that was a fantastic gig!

But don’t think for a second that things are going to slow down as we move into the new year – in fact we’re just getting started. A brand new UK mini-tour begins on January 31st 2024, with visits to Bristol, Manchester, London, Swansea, and the amazing Planet Rock Winter’s End festival held at Trecco Bay in Porthcawl. All the details and ticket links for the tour dates can be found here: www.godsticks.co.uk/gigs

We’ve also recently released a music video for ‘Throne’ – the 3rd single from ‘This Is What A Winner Looks Like’ – which was filmed in the Auditorium at the incredible Newbridge Memo right here in South Wales. In the meantime, all that remains (see what we did there?) is to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who’s taken the time to listen to our music, come see us live or buy a CD/Vinyl/T-Shirt online or at a gig this year. So we wish you all a very Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year – we’ll see you in 2024!

Darran, Gavin, Tom and Francis
Godstickstag:godsticks.co.uk,2005:Post/72872002023-10-13T14:09:56+01:002023-10-16T15:45:31+01:00Faced With Rage Anniversary
Today is the anniversary of the release of our fourth studio album, Faced With Rage!

Darran, Gavin and Tom looked back on this time and jotted down some of their thoughts:

Darran
This was our first album since signing with Kscope and consequently I suppose we should have felt some extra pressure, but in truth we didn’t really feel any, as it’s never been possible to write for anyone other than ourselves.

However, I did feel pressure when it came to the drums. Up until this album, I’d always have the same method for writing: I’d come up with a riff and then take it to rehearsal and see what drum parts Steve (Roberts, former drummer) would come up with, then record them (to a click) on my handy Zoom mini recorder. I’d also record a sample of each one of his drums.

Then, when I got back to my home studio I would put his drum parts into my DAW and see what worked then edit them, either because one part or other might benefit from having a kick drum removed etc, or I needed a different drum pattern for another section of the song I’d just written. Often I’d just use the sample drums to either add another snare, kick etc or use them to come up with a completely new part. Afterwards, I’d arrange another rehearsal and Steve would play my edited part and I’d go back home and slot that into the existing project file. Either way I needed a drummer to write and at the time of writing the album I didn’t have one.

Whilst Tom started playing with us in late 2015 we hadn’t yet trapped him into joining the band full time because he had other commitments. So I started searching around the Cardiff area for pro drummers who I’d pay to come play some parts for me. The only one stupid enough, but also talented enough, to be interested was Aled Lloyd. I remember when I first met him, he asked why I didn’t use drum sequencer software to create parts, to which I just shrugged, “dunno. This is how I’ve always done it”. A great many fun sessions were had with Aled and he ended up playing the drums on Guilt, Avenge, and Fame and Silence.

But as 2016 progressed I’d begun to wear down Tom into joining the band fulltime. I’d dangled the prospect of a European tour in a bid to entice him, but I eventually sealed his fate by sending anonymous letters in the post threatening to harm his family unless he joined ‘an upcoming local prog metal band with a deity in their name’. I say anonymously, but the police advised that implied anonymity doesn’t work if you sign the letters. It was a mistake that I would repeat 7 years later when submitting Francis to the same harassment campaign when we needed a new bass player.

Once Tom had joined I asked him to rehearse with me also to come up with drums parts, and we more or less immediately clicked (no pun intended). He assiduously pored over the demos I’d sent and always had about 2 or 3 ideas for the track by the time it came to rehearsal. Eventually, I started to use a drum sequencer to come up with ideas but those ideas would always be revised and improved upon by Tom (as he does to this day).

So although the writing process was a little different at first, those FWR sessions helped me shape an approach for future albums.

I actually think this is the most underrated album in our catalogue, although its arguable that they’re all underrated given that we’re not yet headlining Download! We still perform a lot of these tracks live, and in terms of sound and songwriting I still think the album is one of our strongest. I’m really proud of some of the songs on there like ‘Angry concern’ with its eastern-sounding interlude, and the last track ‘Fame and Silence’ which is one of the first songs I’ve written that maintains (more or less) the same riff throughout. I’ve always wanted to write something like that for some reason.

When it came to recording Inescapable I remember visiting both Tony Harris and Johnny Wilks at Kscope HQ, and upon discussing the demos for Inescapable, Tony remarked that he’d always thought that Face with Rage was an album for Godsticks fans, as opposed to one that would draw new fans in. I’d never really thought about it like that but he may have had a point, given that no compromises were made. That said, If any subsequent albums were more commercial-sounding then that would be because that’s the type of music we were into at the time.

Oh…Faced with Rage is a shit album title though. I will concede that. But not as bad as the suggestion you’ll read below.

Gavin
So FWR was my first album with Godsticks. Like many of you I heard the previous album and became even more of a fan especially with the new direction. So when it came to recording this record I knew it was going to be a challenge and an opportunity to raise the bar. One of my favourites is still ‘Revere’ and the stripped down version that we performed for the Kscope birthday show at the Union Chapel. But you may or may not be aware that historically I have the worst ideas for songs and album titles so as much as it shames me, when it came to putting in our suggestions I somehow thought the title ‘Pin The Tail’ would be a strong contender. How wrong was I!

Tom
I had known and followed the band for quite some time before I joined, massively admiring their songwriting and musicianship. When I got the chance to audition for them, I never thought 'the lads' would actually pick me, but they did!

After playing a handful of gigs together, we quickly started writing new music in the heavier style you can first hear on 'Emergence'. For me, that meant lots of nights working away in a rehearsal room with Darran - I would show him the drum part ideas I had for whichever song we were doing, and he would 'produce' my drums; making suggestions and sparking new ideas, or just flat out telling me "Don't do that!". It was a brand new experience for me but it still felt great to collaborate as very often his writing and direction would take me down a new path that I would have never reached on my own, and the drum parts have always been better because of it.

Recording 'Faced With Rage' at Monnow Valley Studio was huge for me. I had never done any kind of recording on that scale before, but I was learning at every turn and loving every moment of it. Being in that amazing location where the sole focus was making music just put you in the right mindset to work hard, and give it your best. For me at least, I felt that the band was about to reach a whole new level with the new heavier direction, and of course the backing of Kscope, so the future was looking so bright and I couldn't be more excited for what was to come.
Godstickstag:godsticks.co.uk,2005:Post/72663652023-08-31T19:55:59+01:002023-08-31T19:56:00+01:00Back On Tour in 2024!
Hello Everyone

Fingers crossed you’ve all had the chance to give our new album ‘This Is What A Winner Looks Like’ a listen now, and we hope you like it. We have been blown away by all the amazing press the album has received, and of course all the very kind comments from you, the fans, on our social media pages, so thank you all so much. We’re incredibly grateful for your continued support, and it really does make this new album a ‘winner’ in our eyes.

So what’s happening next? Well, we had so much fun on our mini-tour in June playing great shows in Cardiff, London, Newcastle and Edinburgh, that we decided to do it all again! Darran, Gavin, Tom and of course our new bass player Francis, will be back on the road between the end of January and the beginning of February next year for more live gigs. We asked on our social media pages where YOU wanted to see us play live, and we listened - so not only are we returning to happy hunting grounds like Manchester and London, but we will also be playing our first ever headline shows in both Bristol and Swansea.

But that’s not all – there will be a second chance for our Welsh brethren to see us live next year, as we’ll also be performing at the Planet Rock Winter’s End Festival at Trecco Bay in Porthcawl. Our last visit there (to the Planet RockStock festival) was nearly 6 years ago now, so we’re very excited to experience the big stage this time around and play alongside so many great bands.

Tickets for all live shows can be found on our website HERE, and if you haven’t checked out our new album yet, you can purchase a copy from our store page or buy/stream from one of the other sites here: godsticks.lnk.to/winner

There may also be some other exciting things on the horizon, but all will be revealed soon…
Godstickstag:godsticks.co.uk,2005:Post/72155052023-05-25T22:05:55+01:002023-05-25T22:05:56+01:00New album, new video, new bassist!
Hello everyone! We are very excited to tell you about our new single ‘If I Don’t Take It All’, taken from our new upcoming album ‘This Is What A Winner Looks Like’. As you can see from the music video (link below), we went for a much darker tone this time out! Our amazing videographer Martin Holmes created this prison-like atmosphere that, along with some really energetic performances by the band, perfectly captures what this song is about. We’re very happy with the finished product and we hope you will check it out, share it, like it, all the usual stuff.

But you may also be wondering, “Who’s that guy on the bass?”. Well, if you follow us on social media you will most likely already be aware that our friend and long-time bassist Dan Nelson has decided to leave Godsticks. You can read the announcement for the full explanation but to cut a long story short, Dan just felt that it was time to move on, and we all wish him well for the future. We’re all still mates and of course we will miss his contribution to Godsticks as he is without doubt an indelible part of our sound. We think he’s saved his best until last too, as you’ll find out when ‘This Is What A Winner Looks Like’ is released on May 26th! You can order the album on CD or vinyl on our store page.

Now I guess we are beginning a new chapter along with this new music, and the new bass player that’s coming along for the ride is Francis George. Last year he filled in on bass for our performance at Prog Power Europe, and somehow managed to not only learn our very complex material in no time at all, but play it with a great sound and feel. So it was a no-brainer really; we knew we had to invite him to join us!

This new line-up will be on the road in June as we embark on another mini-tour of the U.K! Catch us live in Cardiff, London, Newcastle and Edinburgh between June 22nd and 25th – make sure you get your tickets in advance now from www.godsticks.co.uk/gigs

Finally, we must say a big thank you to everyone who has already listened to the first single from the new album, which is called ‘Mayhem’. We have been inundated with very kind comments, and we’re so happy to see you all enjoying what is one of the heavier tracks from ‘This Is What A Winner Looks Like’. The music video, also directed by Martin Holmes, has surpassed 20k views in a little over a month and is still climbing! So if you haven’t seen it yet, make sure you check it out now!

Godsticks
Godstickstag:godsticks.co.uk,2005:Post/71673322023-03-08T12:28:46+00:002023-03-08T12:28:46+00:00Gigs and New Album - 2023
We know it’s been a long time since we’ve updated you, but it’s been a very busy (and exciting) time for Godsticks. After spending some time at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire last summer, we’ve been hard at work completing the new songs that will appear on our upcoming sixth studio album. Giving due care and attention to every aspect of a new release, not just the music, is a very long process but believe me when we say that we can’t wait to share more news about the new album with you all very soon!

In between time spent in the studio and writing last year, we also had the pleasure of performing at some international festivals, beginning with Comendatio Festival in Portugal where we shared the stage with some amazing bands like Haken, Plini, Rendezvous Point and Lizzard. We also played at the wonderful 2 Days Prog +1 Festival in Italy (alongside fellow Kscope bands Tangerine Dream and Gong), and the amazing Prog Power Europe Festival in the Netherlands. It felt so good to be playing live again, and we didn’t want to wait too much longer before getting back out there. So now we can finally announce… Godsticks will be back on the road in June, playing headline shows across the U.K!

More info & tickets links at www.godsticks.co.uk/gigs

The 4-date tour will see us return to happy hunting grounds and visit venues old and new, going from Cardiff to London, then Newcastle and Edinburgh. You can find more info for each show and all the ticket links here on our website, and we hope to extend things with more headline shows later in the year too!

Godstickstag:godsticks.co.uk,2005:Post/69917702022-06-11T15:43:37+01:002022-06-11T15:43:37+01:002022 Live Performances
Hello, hope everyone is doing well out there!

We hadn’t recorded any acoustic songs since ‘Emergence’ so it was a nice opportunity to dust off the ‘ol Martin Guitar and see if our finger callouses were still up to the task.

Today the songs on that bonus disc are available for streaming and download. One is a new track called ‘Motion’, one is acoustic version of ‘Surrender’ and the other is a piano/vocal version of ‘Breathe’. Those last two songs are from 'Inescapable' and it was an interesting experience stripping them down to their bare components and seeing if they still sound cool. We think they do and hope you can find some time to check them out! https://godsticks.lnk.to/motion

With Wales currently in the middle of a lockdown and England just about to enter one, we feel that moving the shows to a later date when we can assure the safety of everyone involved in the shows, and attending them, would be the best course of action. So, here are the new dates:

September 9th 2021 - Fuel Rock Club, Cardiff

September 10th 2021 - Gullivers, Manchester

September 11th 2021 - The Black Heart, London

As usual, all current tickets purchased will still be valid for the new dates and we hope you will hold on to yours. But if anyone would like to request a refund, please contact your venue/ticket provider. We are very sorry to change things around again, and we hope everyone out there is staying safe!

The first show will be in London on Thursday December 3rd, followed by Manchester on Friday December 4th and Cardiff on Thursday December 10th.
Of course we're all trying to keep ourselves entertained while stuck at home as well, so we had a bit of fun with this one. Hope you enjoy!

It represented a significant change in musical direction for Godsticks, one which felt natural to us and has stuck with us through our fourth album 'Faced with Rage' and our upcoming fifth album. So we were delighted when our record label Kscope told us they’d like to re-release Emergence! The new version features two bonus tracks that were mixed by Bruce Soord from The Pineapple Thief. It's been a huge privilege to be the opening act for many great bands over the last few years but to have the opportunity to present a full 90 minutes of our own music is a very exciting prospect indeed. We’ll be playing lots of songs from Faced with Rage including quite a few tracks never before performed live, so it promises to be very special indeed.

As if that wasn’t enough, we will also be performing at two amazing festivals. First off is Prog Sud, a well known progressive rock festival held every year in Marseille, France. Godsticks will be performing on Thursday 10th May alongside Telescope Road and Lazuli. Secondly we will be performing at Stone Free Festival on 17th June at The O2 in London! We feel honoured to be part of an amazing line-up of acts on the Sunday, including Richie Kotzen, Ana_thema and Yes. Godsticks will be the opening act on the Indigo At The O2 stage.

So, to say we’re looking forward to the next few months would be an understatement. We’d love to meet as many of you as possible at these gigs and festivals - come and have a chat with us after the show! Here’s a run down of all our upcoming live performances.

We've been delighted by the press reaction to our new album, here are a few of our favourite quotes:

Emergence is a rare thing – an album of technically astounding prog-metal replete with hooks and melodies [Total Guitar Magazine]

A mighty tour de force of tip-top riffery [Guitarist Magazine]

A truly captivating album far ahead of some of the more predictable prog-metal releases [Prog Magazine]

From the disturbing cover art...to the unity of the music and words, 'Emergence' is an arresting all round package [Powerplay Magazine]

Dark and muscular prog heaviness from one of the UK's most idiosyncratic rock bands [Metal Hammer]

Cleverly crafted ear-candy and daring lead guitar work [Guitar and Bass Magazine]

We can't wait to play these tracks live, it's going to be a high energy performance from us this autumn. During this recording process we took some time out to discuss the sounds used for the new album, the heavier direction that our sound was taking, and the experience of working with James Loughrey. The video was filmed and edited by Chris Vinnicombe.

Title track 'Emergence' is full of scorching riffs, pounding drums and more brilliant guitar work from Charles." Uber Rock

"The traditional Godsticks sound is still present but assembled with a different outlook that incorporates a heavier perspective within a slightly stripped down environment.
